Viking is the name most people picture when they imagine a European river cruise — and for good reason. It is the largest river cruise line in the world, built around understated Scandinavian design, a destination-first philosophy, and an adults-only atmosphere that draws curious, culturally minded travelers.

About Viking

Norwegian entrepreneur Torstein Hagen founded Viking in 1997 and helped define the modern, purpose-built river ship. In the decades since, it has grown into the largest river cruise line in the world. Viking famously describes itself as “the thinking person’s cruise, not the drinking person’s cruise” — there are no casinos, no pools and no children under 18. The focus is squarely on the destination, cultural enrichment and calm, elegant ships.

The fleet

Viking’s signature Longships stretch about 443 feet and carry roughly 190 guests, wrapped in light Scandinavian design — pale woods, clean lines and floor-to-ceiling glass. Every stateroom faces the river, with categories running from standard staterooms up to French-balcony and veranda staterooms, roomy Veranda Suites, and the two-room Explorer Suite with its wraparound balcony. The glass-enclosed Aquavit Terrace at the bow serves indoor or al-fresco dining with panoramic sailing views, and the sun deck adds an herb garden, shuffleboard and a putting green. Smaller “baby Longships” handle the narrower Douro, Elbe and Seine.

Where they sail

Europe’s great rivers form the core of the program — the Rhine, Danube, Main, Douro, Seine, Rhône, Moselle and Elbe — including the classic routes most travelers start with. Beyond Europe, Viking also sails the Nile in Egypt, the Mekong in Southeast Asia and the Mississippi in the United States, with India debuting in late 2027. (Russia and Ukraine sailings are currently suspended.)

Who it’s for

Viking is at its best for couples, solo travelers and experienced travelers who want the destination — the history, food and culture — front and center, in a refined and unhurried setting. Because it is adults-only, with a minimum age of 18, it is not built for family or multi-generational trips; for those, AmaWaterways or Avalon are better fits.

Viking calls itself “the thinking person’s cruise, not the drinking person’s cruise” — a fair shorthand for the understated, culturally curious experience it is built around.

Viking river cruises: FAQs

Is Viking all-inclusive?

Viking includes a great deal: one guided shore excursion in every port, wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi, and onboard enrichment. Airfare, gratuities and optional premium excursions are extra, so it is best described as nearly all-inclusive.

How many ships does Viking have?

Viking operates roughly 90 river ships — the largest river fleet in the world — with more on order through 2028. Most European Longships carry about 190 guests.

Where does Viking river cruise?

Across Europe (the Rhine, Danube, Main, Douro, Seine, Rhône, Moselle and Elbe), plus the Nile in Egypt, the Mekong in Southeast Asia and the Mississippi in the United States, with India launching in late 2027.

Is Viking good for families?

No — Viking is adults-only with a minimum age of 18, so it is not set up for children or multi-generational travel. Couples, solo travelers and culturally minded adults are the sweet spot; families are usually better served by AmaWaterways or Avalon.
